Following research last week suggesting that HSBC has a major capital shortfall, the fact that several farmer's co-ops were unable to pay back depositors in China, and, of course, the liquidity crisis in China itself,news from The BBC that HSBC is imposing restrictions on large cash withdrawals raising a number of red flags. The BBC reports that some HSBC customers have been prevented from withdrawing large amounts of cash because they could not provide evidence of why they wanted it. HSBC admitted it has not informed customers of the change in policy, which was implemented in November for their own good: "We ask our customers about the purpose of large cash withdrawals when they are unusual... the reason being we have an obligation to protect our customers, and to minimise the opportunity for financial crime." As one customer responded: "you shouldn't have to explain to your bank why you want that money. It's not theirs, it's yours."

Some HSBC customers have been prevented from withdrawing large amounts of cash because they could not provide evidence of why they wanted it, the BBC has learnt.
Listeners have told Radio 4's Money Box they were stopped from withdrawing amounts ranging from £5,000 to £10,000.
HSBC admitted it has not informed customers of the change in policy, which was implemented in November.
The bank says it has now changed its guidance to staff.
"When we presented them with the withdrawal slip, they declined to give us the money because we could not provide them with a satisfactory explanation for what the money was for. They wanted a letter from the person involved."Mr Cotton says the staff refused to tell him how much he could have: "So I wrote out a few slips. I said, 'Can I have £5,000?' They said no. I said, 'Can I have £4,000?' They said no. And then I wrote one out for £3,000 and they said, 'OK, we'll give you that.' "
He asked if he could return later that day to withdraw another £3,000, but he was told he could not do the same thing twice in one day.
Mr Cotton cannot understand HSBC's attitude: "I've been banking in that bank for 28 years. They all know me in there. You shouldn't have to explain to your bank why you want that money. It's not theirs, it's yours."
HSBC has said that following customer feedback, it was changing its policy: "We ask our customers about the purpose of large cash withdrawals when they are unusual and out of keeping with the normal running of their account. Since last November, in some instances we may have also asked these customers to show us evidence of what the cash is required for."
"The reason being we have an obligation to protect our customers, and to minimise the opportunity for financial crime. However, following feedback, we are immediately updating guidance to our customer facing staff to reiterate that it is not mandatory for customers to provide documentary evidence for large cash withdrawals, and on its own, failure to show evidence is not a reason to refuse a withdrawal. We are writing to apologise to any customer who has been given incorrect information and inconvenienced."But Eric Leenders, head of retail at the British Bankers Association, said banks were sensible to ask questions of their customers: "I can understand it's frustrating for customers. But if you are making the occasional large cash withdrawal, the bank wants to make sure it's the right way to make the payment."

Mort: How did you come up with this idea of an ‘Operation American Spring’?
Col. Riley: I, and believe “we the people” have been agonizing for more than five years, watching the deterioration of America at the hands of unscrupulous politicians, and seeking corrective action. With pen in hand, while writing down a rant, a portion of the many grievances against the leadership in America, my mind turned to our Founding Fathers and the Egyptian Spring…….
I realized we face much the same abuse that our Founding Fathers were experiencing. A Crown exerting a heel of pain on our early citizens, much like Barack Obama and other betrayers are imposing on America today. The list of grievances is long as it was in the 1700’s, but suffice to say, the current leadership in the United States Executive Branch, Congress and Courts have abandoned the US Constitution, disregard their oath, have taken on the reflection of dictator, tyrants, incompetents or all of these characteristics. They attempt to govern outside lawful means, picking and choosing which laws to obey and which to ignore, writing new laws and regulations at the Executive department whim with absolutely no oversight by Congress or the Courts…in short the United States is in a lawless, floundering, chaotic, condition. Who suffers the greatest? “We the people” just as our early citizens experienced.
For more than five years, “we the people” have been writing, calling, faxing Congress, the media, screaming in Town Halls,marching, rallying, demonstrating, petitioning, all to no avail. Every branch of government looks at “we the people” whom they have taken an oath to serve, as “pests”, interfering with their political agenda, cramping their self-serving, greedy agendas. We’re modeling the principle of people massing, not modeling Egyptian government nor military. Not to bring down the government, our government structure works fine, it’s the criminal, betraying, deceiving occupants of federal government that must be removed to save our nation.
Mort: Your hoping 10 million people will show up for OAS, isn’t that kind of high?
Col. Riley: In less than 30 days of the call for the massive “movement to action” in Washington, D.C., nearly every State in America, every political persuasion, rich, poor, every color, all ages, men, women, liberal, conservative, independent, unemployed, et al are now mobilizing to participate in this peaceful, non-violent, cause in the search for constitutional restoration for America. We have well over 1 million militia members mobilizing; bikers, truckers, hunters, Tea Party groups….citizens across America. No, I don’t think 10 million is high at all…the energy, determination, and willingness to have the “back” of the United States Constitution has finally resonated with the call, “enough is enough”…..we’ll have no more of it!
Mort: OAS will be using civil disobedience in the hopes of shutting down D.C., why hasn’t anyone else thought of this?
Col. Riley: There is a time for all things under heaven………God willing, now is the time for this massive, gigantic effort as a last stand before America moves into a more devastating condition. Americans are long suffering and patient, but God has made a way for freedom and liberty loving Americans to answer the call in defense of our nation.
Why it hasn’t happened before, may be that Americans of every persuasion have only now awakened to the very real threats to our freedom and liberty… Barack Obama is a fraud. Never before have we faced any enemy that has resembled a slow growing, but deadly cancer creeping throughout America represented by betrayers, deceivers, political operatives, that have no allegiance to the United States.
Mort: The ‘Truckers Ride for the Constitution’ was a total failure, what is different about Operation American Spring?
Col. Riley: We learn from every event……I don’t agree the the Truckers effort was a total failure. They have paved the way, we will expand on it…the difference is that Operation American Spring will not be just a ride through Washington, D.C., we will be there in massive numbers and intend to remain there until acceptable solutions are gained.
Mort: Let’s say OAS is successful in shutting down D.C., what happensthen?
Col. Riley: A shut down will impact government, it will impact commerce, it will make people mad, some will welcome it, some won’t. Freedom isn’t free, it costs, a price that has been paid by millions of lives, body parts, blood, family destruction. This sacrifice demands that leadership in government serve “we the people” not vice versa. It is unclear how this will all unravel but we are calling for the removal of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Nancy Pelosi, and Eric Holder as a start toward constitutional restoration. They have all abandoned the US Constitution, are unworthy to be retained in a position that calls for servant status…they have demonstrated lawlessness, utter disregard for “we the people” cowardice, and incompetence.

MOSCOW, January 24 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian carrier group that entered the Mediterranean earlier this month has begun a series of naval aviation exercises, a navy spokesman said Friday.
“The naval aviators are conducting training in dogfighting, high-speed interception and improving their skills in flying intricate aerobatic maneuvers,” Captain of the 1st Class Vadim Serga said.
Russia formed a permanent naval task force in the Mediterranean last year to defend its interests in the region. The move was widely seen as a response to calls for international intervention in the worsening civil war in Syria, Russia’s longtime ally.
The group of ships, led by Russia’s sole aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, is currently located in waters near Spain’s Balearic Islands.

In August, Russian media quoted a military source saying a group of Russian warships on a long-distance cruise would soon call at the country’s only Mediterranean naval facility in the Syrian port city of Tartus.
The Admiral Kuznetsov led another group of ships to that facility two years ago.
Serga said that over 20 training flights by the ship’s Su-33 Flanker-D fighter jets were planned.
The group, dispatched by Russia’s Northern Fleet, was escorted by a British destroyer as it approached Scotland last month.

A photograph taken in London’s Park Lane underscores how authorities are randomly using dubious unspecified terror threats to set up ‘papers please’ checkpoints where innocent passers-by are searched by police.

The sign in the photo reads, “SECURITY OPERTION: Officers are conducting patrols in this area to deter and disrupt terrorist activity. There is not specific intelligence to suggest terrorist activity in this area but terrorists need to plan and prepare by observing possible targets or transporting equipment and material around.”
“Police activities, including stop and search, will make it harder for terrorists to operate. Your co-operation and patience will help keep London safe.”
In 2010, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that stop and search procedures without grounds for suspicion were illegal.
Last year it was found that a quarter of of police stop and search procedures in the UK were being carried out without officers obeying the law.

“ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE IS ESSENTIAL,” the sign reads above an image of a man in a balaclava with an AK-47 sat at a computer. The ad goes on to make the claim, proven false by numerous recent credible studies, that electronic snooping is useful in disrupting terrorist plots.
The poster is actually an ad for the Economist magazine but looks more like something you’d see in a dystopian thriller like Minority Report or The Running Man. Although it should appear next to a similar poster which takes the opposing view on mass surveillance, it didn’t in this instance.
